OMG, You Have to Take This Class
(And I Wrote This Before I Started Teaching It)
Urban Cycling Techniques various dates
Seriously, folks.
You want to gain confidence riding? You want to feel comfortable on the road, whether you're commuting or just on your way to the Burke Gilman Trail? You want to ride competently and safely in traffic?
I cannot recommend this class strongly enough.
I had been road riding--even long distances--in some tough city traffic 25+ years before I took this class, and I learned tons.
Topics include:
Riding through intersections, including left-turn techniques
Negotiating with cars, including communicating with drivers
Learning and following traffic laws pertaining to bicycles
Properly fitting a helmet
Basic maintenance safety check, incuding a review of fixing a flat
Basic and emergency cycling skills, like scanning, braking, dodging a rock, and signaling
Crash avoidance techniques
Lane positioning
General bike fit and positioning
Timing
The class is four hours in the classroom, four hours on your bike, with an additional 1.5 optional hours. The cost is $85 for members; $90 for nonmembers. Note: I don't know yet whether prices will change in 2011.
